Criminology and Forensic Psychology (CSI 102)
Grades 9-12
If your students are fascinated by criminology, forensics, and detective work, this class will take them deep into the world of crime, giving them a better understanding of the criminal mindset and how law enforcement officials investigate crime. Students will gain real-world knowledge of the reasons for and consequences of crime, the way society responds to it, and, most importantly, how crimes can be prevented. This class will teach students about forensic psychology, with fascinating case examples from around the world.
Students will discover why people commit crimes, how psychology helps in the investigative process, the ways psychologists work with criminals behind bars - and how they can become forensic psychologists. Students will discover what a typical day is like for a forensic psychologist, how they work with the police to build offender profiles, interview suspects or witnesses, and detect lies!
Opportunities for dissection and crime scene lab work will be made available at various local museums, including the Houston Museum of Natural Science, and the Health Museum. A previous course in CSI is recommended before taking this course, but students may be allowed to enroll with the teacher’s permission. The class will use Criminology for Dummies and Forensic Psychology for Dummies.
Upon successful completion of this course, students will have a high school credit in either Psychology or Criminology. Since parents are the ultimate teachers, they may choose which discipline is most appropriate for their students.
Friendly Chemistry
Grades 9-12
This class uses a truly unique approach to teaching introductory chemistry. This class makes chemistry easy to learn, with hands-on learning tools for chemistry vocabulary as well as structures, ions, forming compounds, formulas, reactions, equations, and more. Students using this course will be exposed to all topics typically taught in a traditional high school chemistry course.
However, the textbook isn't as dense with print as other textbooks. Students will complete worksheets and hands-on activities as part of the learning process rather than the traditional course structure where students read and study the text then complete lab assignments separately.
The goal of the course is to lay a foundation so that students are prepared for a freshman college level chemistry course yet keep it from being overwhelming. A previous course in Algebra is recommended before taking this course, but is not required. The class will use Friendly Chemistry as its text.
Upon successful completion of this course, students will have a high school credit in Chemistry.
Movies as Literature and Art
Grades 9-12
This course uses classic movies on video, and excerpts from movies, to introduce and study the elements of literary and film analysis. It will also introduce students to the history of cinematography and cinematic effects. It will not only give students the tools to appreciate good books more fully, but will equip them with the ability to look for and understand special effects and cinematic elements, which help convey underlying messages, rather than simply absorb the movies as entertainment.
The class will use Movies as Literature workbook as its primary source , but will also use worksheets in order to cover important movies not in the text.. Movies and movie excerpts include:
Le Voyage Danse La Lune
Hugo
The Great Dictator
Arsenic and Old Lace
The Music Man
E.T. the extra-terrestrial
To Kill A Mockingbird
A Raisin in the Sun
Raiders of the Lost Ark
stand by me
The princess bride
A Man For All Seasons
Chariots of Fire
Upon successful completion of this course, students will have a high school credit in English and half a credit in Art.
¡El Español Fácil!
Grades 9-12
Way more than a computer game that simply teaches words, ¡El Español Fácil! has everything a student needs to succeed to learn Spanish. If students want to go beyond "getting by" on a missions trip, then they need to understand the Spanish people, their culture, and their expressions. Every lesson includes Spanish Cultural Notes and Trivia. The aim of ¡El Español Fácil! is to turn students into truly bilingual speakers, able to go into business with, or present the Gospel to, the Spanish speaking world.
Upon successful completion of this course, students will have a high school credit in Spanish.
